Nuwara Eliya

Just before our drive upwards to the hill country, we made a stop to see and tour a spice garden.  It was interesting to see the plants and trees that grow some of the spices and aryuvedic medicines that Sri Lankans use. We bought some (stinky) oil that is supposed to ease back pain and cure it within 2 weeks...we'll see!  No matter, because I'm sure Ramzi will enjoy the back rubs just the same.
So,winding uphill roads finally gave way to the fresh, crisp and clean air of Nuwara Eliya City. This city in the hills, has the coolest temperatures on the island.  However, we were still able to wear shorts and tee's!  We would suggest a light sweater or jacket, as the breeze can be a little chilly.  While here, we walked around the gorgeous gardens of Jetwing St. Andrew's Hotel, and enjoyed all the shades of green.  We toured a tea factory, as this is the area that most of the islands tea comes from.  We took a boat ride around Gregory Lake and had a lovely time at the Grand Hotel.
We traveled by train, so we could get a glimpse of the interior beauty of Sri Lanka, and it was BEAUTIFUL.  While on the train, I was quite amused as locals were allowed to come aboard at almost every stop and try and sell their good.  We ended up buying some fresh roasted peanuts and vade's to eat, apparently the boxes of "Grand Hotel" bakery items was not enough food for us to make it on this 4 hour scenic train ride to our next city, Kandy.
